Winter driving in Georgia: what to expect

From November through March every car in our fleet runs winter tyres. That is automatic and costs nothing extra.
Passes
The Jvari Pass above Gudauri closes temporarily during heavy snow, sometimes for a day or two. The Abano Pass into Tusheti is effectively impassable from October to May and we do not permit rentals over it in that period.
Chains
If you are heading to Gudauri or Bakuriani, take chains. The police do check at the foot of the climb and will turn you back without them. You can add chains to your booking as an extra.
Practical advice
It gets dark around 17:30 in midwinter. Mountain roads at night, in snow, with an unfamiliar car is a poor combination - start early and plan to arrive in daylight.
